10 OCTOBER 2008

One of the first orders of business in the chapel was to open a package that had arrived from the United States. There is a church in Montgomery, Alabama that sends resource material to The Chapel of the Snows each year. They have become keenly aware of the shipping issues and so get the package to Hickam AFB, Hawaii, they get the package onto a C17 that is headed to New Zealand and then this package makes its way into the hands of the chaplains that open the season on the Ice.

I am starting my rotation with Dan Doyle, a Catholic priest from NZ. He has a fascinating history having worked as a first contact missionary with the indigenous people of Papua New Guinea, when the villagers were still cannibals. I have been trying to convince him to write a book...these tales of his experience are priceless and beat any documentary I have ever seen about the people of Papua New Guinea.
